Exhibition Land Forces Academy, 175 years of Romanian military education at the History Museum - Altemberger House in Sibiu The history of 175 years of Romanian military education of one of the most important institutions in Romania - the Nicolae Balcescu Land Forces Academy in Sibiu will be on display in an exhibition that will open on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at 12:00 p.m. at the History Museum - Altemberger House in Sibiu. The curators of the exhibition: Toma-Cosmin Roman PhD and Alexandru Constantin Chituță PhD are of the opinion that: "This exhibition brings to the fore relevant aspects concerning the history of a landmark institution in university education in general and in military education in particular. The Nicolae Bălcescu Land Forces Academy had and still has a great importance not only in Sibiu but also in Romania. Today the "Nicolae Bălcescu" Land Forces Academy, continuing the educational and institutional traditions of the first military school for officers in Romania, is the institution of higher military education integrated into the national educational system, with university autonomy." The birth certificate of the "Nicolae Balcescu" Land Forces Academy was given by the Royal Decree no. 36, dated June 13, 1847, by Gheorghe Bibescu. The establishment of the first Military School of Officers in Bucharest was an important moment in the development of Romanian society. The need to form a corps of officers to train and lead troops in case of need for the defence of the Romanian Lands was very well understood by the Romanian intelligentsia in the mid-19th century. The establishment of the first officers' school marked, in fact, the beginning of Romanian military education. It inaugurated a system of officer training that exists in all modern armies in educational institutions with a specific military profile. The founding of this body, which was intended to train future army officers, was the work and genius of people who had the intuition of the future development of the Romanian Lands. Special merit went to some great men of the time, such as General Gheorghe Magheru, General Christian Tell, Colonel Ion Voinescu and, of course, Gheorghe Bibescu. Last, but not least, the great historian, patriot, revolutionary and military thinker Nicolae Bălcescu had a special merit. It was not by chance that the military school received the name Nicolae Bălcescu in 1952. The exhibition, realized in partnership, can be visited in the temporary exhibition hall of the Museum of History - Altemberger House in Sibiu until September 4, 2022.
