Text from the exhibition curators: Darkness of Mexico is a project put together by contemporary Mexican artists for the release of their artwork in various countries, celebrating its 20th anniversary at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen Festival in Leipzig, Germany in 2011. The present exhibition engages the matter of death from a Mexican particular point of view. Although still a taboo subject, the ending of life and the remains of human existence between crude reality and more consoling approaches endures as a meaningful fraction of culture worldwide; it reflects in the work of the old masters as well as in the ones created by today’s artists. The 60 Mexican artists exhibiting in Brukenthal Palace draw their inspiration from various sources (prehispanic to native and contemporaneous) in approaching the thematic of death with attentiveness but also with a passionate attachment to the different aspects of their native tradition. An event dedicated to the Artmania public, the exhibition presents through the means of photography, painting and graphic works a confluence of traditional with the emergence of the artistic phenomenon from new-wave towards dark-wave, post-punk and even post-goth, without neglecting the fascination for urban myths raised in the shadows of Transylvania.
