Text from the exhibition curator:
The present exhibition brings to Sibiu a part of the works comprised in George Lawanda’s creation, thematic portraits, sketches, cartoons, working notebooks appertaining to the artist along a documentary with his students. Löwendal Foundation in Bucharest aims at emphasizing the importance of Baron’s George Löwendal creation as painter, graphic artist, professor and master of the first generation of artists in the post-wars Romania (1897 – 1964).
„All is permitted in art if it reaches the superlative” is the statement of George Löwendal.
The present exhibition in Sibiu is part of the 2014 exhibition series that celebrates the passing of 50 years since his death and brings on display 50 pieces attesting the variety of artist’s creation in modern scenography. Löwendal is receptive to the mutations of the early 20th century (Futurism, Constructivism and Expressionism) supporting with all his creative efforts the „theatrelizing of the theatre” movement, closely cooperating with the most important of the Romanian directors and being acclaimed by the most exigent critics of his time. He proposed technical innovations and initiated strategic cultural projects: the opening of the first marionette theatre in Romania and the establishment of the Artist Union as well as collaborating to the opening of a children theatre.
