Text from the exhibition curators:
The first half of the 20th century, especially the inter-war period, represented one of the most effervescent stages of the artistic life in Romania. The number of artists increased significantly and their contacts with the great European cultural centers brought the influences of the newest trends along with an amazing stylistic diversity. That was the way in which Romania bridged towards synchronicity with the emergence of European artistic phenomenon.
The exhibition presents representative figures for the new spirit of Romanian avant-garde and modernism: Marcel Iancu, Max Hermann Maxy, Margareta Sterian, Lola Schmierer-Roth, Alexandru Ziffer, Jules Perahim, Iosif Iser, Samuel Mützner, Viorel Huşi and Max Arnold. The works reflect influences from: fauvism, post-inpressionism, cubism, surrealism and dadaism.
The exhibition also displays recently donated works of contemporary art by Israeli artists that opened exhibitions in the Museum: Saia Hary and Hindes Wartenberg Zamira.
