Text from the curators:
The valuable collection of Italian graphic art housed at the Brukenthal National Museum comprises a considerable diversity of engravings with mythological themes. This iconographic compendium encompasses not only representations of specific scenes from ancient literature but also images of individual deities. This characteristic has given consistency to the idea of conceiving a rich project, with the main objective of guiding both visitors and observers on a captivating journey through the history of engravings, thus allowing for a lively and vibrant revival of the myth itself through the enchanting artistic perspective of the greatest Italian painters and engravers who excelled in the period spanning from the 15th to the 19th centuries, all present in the museum's collection.
The names of Carlo Cesio, Domenico Cunego, Giuseppe Sforza Perini, Camillo Tinti, Giovanni Volpato, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, and Giuseppe Rosaspina resonate with consolidated fame and, through their creations, we embark on a path that allows us to rediscover the rich heritage of Italian paintings, treading in the footsteps left by eminent figures such as Raphael, Pietro da Cortona, Domenichino, Francesco Albani, Polidoro, and Palma il Giovane.
