The exhibition The Woman from Model to Professional Artist is part of the process of restoring a social and cultural balance that contemporary society needs so much and proposes that through the strategy of the cultural event organized by the Brukenthal National Art Museum and the County Art Museum “Baia Mare Artistic Center”, to recall the winding route of the female presence in the pages of art history from the status of model, to that of artist, creator.
Within the two basic segments of the theme - the woman seen as a model (in works signed by Bernáth Aurel, Ferenczy Valér, Nicolae Tonitza, Iosif Iser, Anastase Demian, Theodor Pallady, Gheorghe Petrașcu, Octav Băncilă, Corneliu Baba, Traian Bilțiu Dăncuș, Mihai Olos etc.) respectively the professional artist (Cecilia Cuțescu–Storck, Modok Mária, Csikos Antónia, Grete Csaki-Copony, Margarete Depner, Milița Petrașcu, Magdalena Rădulescu, Doina Lie etc.) – the almost 80 works of painting and sculpture of the XIX-XX centuries from the collections of the partner museums are presented in juxtapositions at a compositional and conceptual level, on aspects that define women, from their psychological profile, to the roles they hold towards themselves, towards their family, within society. The exhibition concept highlights "brands" and approaches of the feminine "substance", whether it is seen and understood through men’s eyes, filter and emotion, or from within herself, that is, from and by women representatives. The construction of the exhibition proves that, regardless of whether she is involved in the creative process as a model or creator, the feminine essence gives a special atmosphere, a special charm, a depth and a certain mystery that conquers, convinces and makes this theme deep, challenging and always charged with content and emotion.
One of the offers of the exhibition is the presentation of a large number of original or rarely exhibited and quasi-unknown works, alongside the creations of famous artists, whose place is well marked in the Romanian and European artistic landscape. It is premiering in Sibiu: The girl with the cat, by Nicolae Tonitza, The portrait of a girl by Elena Vavilinia, The woman in the armchair by Thorma János, the spectacular composition Women Bathing by Camil Ressu and other pieces signed by important names in the history of art in Romania. Pieces from the two museums’ collections that have never been exhibited or have not been exhibited for a very long time have been specially restored for this exhibition, among which an admirable Portrait of a Woman by an unknown artist from the first half of the 19th century, Grandmother of the artist Hans Eder, Woman in the mirror, by Theodor Pallady, Bathing Women, by Max Hermann MAXY, Nude on the chair, by Alexandru Ciucurencu, Woman in an armchair bu Thorma János et al.
In continuation of the previous projects organized at the Brukenthal National Museum, the Symposium and International Exhibition of Women's Art "European Bridges - Tradition and Continuity (2007, in collaboration with Senso Gallery) and "Centenary of Women in Romanian Art" (2017, in collaboration with Postmodernism Museum), the exhibition is also meant to open an objective debate, beyond stereotypes, about the real feminine models, creative, brave and trailblazers, who created aesthetic values with an impact on the trajectory of the development of art.
