Text from the exhibition curator: Dorothea Schmierer-Roth was the daughter of a consul appointed by the Low Countries in the city of Galaţi and also the granddaughter of Hariton Tiktin – Academy member. After her first drawing lessons under the supervision of Italian painter Antonio Zumimo, Dorothea (also known as Lola), endeavored to several stages in art initiation in Berlin continuing the training in Romania with painter Ion Theodorescu-Sion and in Paris where attended Julian Academy, Ranson Academy and the workshop of painter Andre Derain. In doing so, the young artist became familiar with the European art of the 20th century, managing to acquire in her own production elements drawn from Secession, Expressionism, Cubism, abstract art and Classicism. During the last decade, Dorothea Schmierer-Roth was re-discovered on the occasion of an important donation from her workshop, addressed by her inheritors Anne-Louise Roth and Alexandru Cezar Ionescu to the Museum. The donation consisting in 15 paintings and 34 drawings is now to be presented for the first time to the general public in Sibiu. The works are illustrating the artistic stages of a period that spans from 1910 to 1970, witnessing that the artist remained faithful to her own artistic creed at all times.
