The exhibition presents the outcome of the most recent studies in the European painting collection of the Brukenthal National Museum, both from the perspective of classification and thematic approach – especially devotio moderna – and in regards to specific research – identifying the authors and characters represented.
The 8 parts of the exhibition structure are: The notion of saint, from ancient polytheism to Christian monotheism; Inhabitants of the Paradise – the community of saints; “The good death” and the intercession of the saints; Martyrdom and the forerunners of martyrs; Martyrs of the first Christian centuries and the Middle Ages; Charitable saints; Hierarchs and Doctors of the Church; Monks.
A number of 51 works from the 15th-18th centuries, covering most of the schools of painting, are presented in 26 plates; some works have never been published or exhibited, and some are being analyzed before and after restoration.
