Exhibition: The making of Baron Samuel von Brukenthal´s library: book auction and catalogues from 1756 to 1796

expo

Location:Brukenthal Palace, Cartography Cabinet
Curator: Alexandru-Ilie Munteanu

The library of Samuel von Brukenthal was a typical example of the encyclopedic, Enlightenment Age library, covering all six major fields of knowledge, as they were structured back in the epoch: Theology, History, Law, Sciences, Arts and Literature. Together with other libraries from the 18th century Transylvania, such as the one belonging to the Catholic Bishop Ignác Batthyány and the one of Count Sámuel Teleki, the collection of roughly 16,000 volumes, put together and preserved by Samuel von Brukenthal in his palace, in Sibiu, was among the largest in Transylvania as well as the Central-Europe.
This exhibition invites ˮthe curious” (as bibliophiles were called in the 18th century) to find out behind the scenes information regarding the making of a library on such a grand scale. In other words, they will get to see how the book market functioned in von Brukenthal´s time, how did he enriched his library, how much did the Governor of Transylvania spent on some of his books and so on.
