Starting in the late 19th century, the Brukenthal National Museum put together a genuine treasury of objects made of precious metals: lay and liturgical silverware, adornments and jewelleries, developed out of the nucleus represented by the numismatic cabinet of Baron Samuel von Brukenthal.
Along with the numismatic collection, the Treasury gradually enriched through the means of donations and acquisitions from among the Evangelical churches, guilds, jewellers etc. An important role in the process of collecting and preserving the pieces played the German-Saxon priests and historians as well as important people of Sibiu city.
The collection comprises over 1000 silverware pieces of which 120 are liturgical items, about 100 are lay items, 655 are adornments and jewelleries and more that 200 are silverware pieces for meal serving.
