The second storey of the dwelling tower shelters the gold coins and medals exhibition, a numismatic endowment in gold, making the pride of today’s Museum. Most of the items in the collection are part of the heritage left by Baron Samuel von Brukenthal – the founder of the Museum – and they get along with the gold coins acquired later by the custodians. Prior in the possession of Samuel von Brukenthal, there are also presented several gold medals.
Specially chosen for the present exhibition, the selection of gold coins is, as always, the most important part of a numismatic collection, for its intricate value and, most of all, for the rarity of the items.
The collection was made up during the 18th, 19th and the first part of the 20th centuries.
The presentation starts with an Imperial Roman aurei selection and continues with medieval and modern coins. The manner of displaying is in accordance with chronological criteria, taking into account the authority issuing them. The exhibited ducats were mostly minted on Transylvanian territories, the most interesting pieces dating from 1612, 1650 and 1664.
The presentation concludes with several gold medals on display.
