The Medieval Lapidarium in the Brukenthal Museum has its beginnings in the late 19th century, as a result of a demolition campaign in Sibiu, to which several buildings of a historical importance were subjected.
The exhibition comprises three sections: items of decorative sculpture, groups of representative architectural elements and gravestones of 17th-19th centuries, once in the community’s cemetery.
Displayed in three rooms of the basement, the exhibition highlights its exhibits through a special design of accent-lighting. The stands for the exhibits are painted in colours suited for the porpoise of evincing their artistry, besides their documentary value.
There is a direct connection between lapidarium and the Martyrs’ Garden, in an illustrative continuity of the exhibited material, offering the association between historical knowledge and spiritual relaxation.
