Text from the curator:

Sibiu was one of the most famous craft centers in medieval and modern times. The products, thanks to the favorable geographic position of the city, were marketed throughout the Romanian space, but also outside it, in the East and Central Europe.
In 1376, the first guideline for the organization of the guilds in Sibiu, Sighișoara, Sebeș and Orăștie was issued. In this paper there were mentioned 25 crafts, grouped in 19 guilds, a number comparable to that of major European craft centers: Ulm (17 guilds), Augsburg (16), Cologne (22), Strasbourg (28).
In 2007, the first journeymen workshops were opened in the courtyard of the Museum of History - the Altemberger House. The European Journeymen Meeting frame project was designed the same year at the initiative of the Brukenthal National Museum and the Evangelical Church. This year we celebrate the ten years of journeymen activity in Sibiu by organizing an exhibition dedicated to the guilds of ironsmiths and carpenters, representing two of the crafts mentioned in the 1376 statute.
The information contained in the photo-documentation panels is illustrated by workshops in which these crafts are handed over to young people willing to practice them.
