BRUKENTHAL PALACE - BASEMENT

PLASTER-CAST COPIES OF FAMOUS SCULPTURES

.
.

The tradition of reproducing art masterpieces is a long one and the practice as such is to be encountered during Roman period, when the Greek sculptures were copied. In the modern times, almost every museum had in its possession copies or reproductions of sculpture, representing the most famous items in the universal art. The collection of plaster-cast copies in the Brukenthal National Museum comprises more than 100 large pieces to which rosettes, medal copies and effigies are to be added.
An exhibition, as the present one is, welcomes a great variety of interests in history, mythology and art.
In the three rooms at the Museum’s basement, the exhibits are displayed in a chronological succession, from the Greek and Roman sculpture to the Renaissance and modern one.
