The Brukenthal Palace was raised to serve as the Baron’s official residence and a worthy display case for his collections. At the first storey of the building there the reception rooms, the medieval Transylvanian art exhibition and the German and Austrian painting exhibition.
In order to precede the presentation of German and Austrian school of painting, the newly introduced sector of medieval Transylvanian art was meant to compensate for the lack of Late Gothic and Renaissance pieces in the Museum’s collections.
On display, there are the works of Transylvanian masters, following models widely spread in the Central Europe. Genuine masterpieces could be among the pieces in this selection.
The presentation of German and Austrian painting was reorganized in 2008 as part of an exhibition extension project, meant to allow a larger number of works (some of them never displayed during last decades) to be exhibited.
There are presented 150 paintings of the 430 items in the collection.
