Text from Alexandru Sonoc, Gabriella Zsigmond, dr. Claudiu Munteanu, exhibition curators:
By the help of paintings, old books, numismatic pieces and phaleristic ones, the exhibition French History, Art and Culture (16th – 19th century) in the Collections of the Brukenthal National Museum aims to present relevant pieces, less known ones in order to illustrate the richness, diversity as well as the values of the collections of the Brukenthal National Museum. Nearby the selected pieces being characteristic for the knowledge of the every day life and forms of representations of the French elites during the 16th to 19th century or in order to illustrate the French-German cultural interferences, including the dynastic relations, an important element of the selection was the relevant pieces belonging to the local history. This was done in the section dedicated to the wars during Napoleon period, whose main painting is the work by August von Mály, The Battle of Aspern, painted in 1891, maybe for the 150 anniversary from the establishing of the 31 regiment of infantry in Sibiu that took part at the above mentioned battle (1809). From the rich collection of numismatics there were selected many medals regarding the important events from the French history from the end of the 17th century till the end of the 19th century. A rare series of medals refers to the development of the French culture during the 18th century as well as the scientific, philosophic and literature books that are exhibited. The achievement of the exhibition, registered in the series of the manifestations under the title Le Baron Francophone, for celebrating The Francophone Month brought also the occasion of discovery of new aspects regarding many of the exhibited works, some of them being restored for this goal.
